Habitat for Humanity - 2010

April 16, 2010 was a work day for Habitat for Humanity and a good show by Church of The Master. Fifteen workers from Church of The Master donated their time and talents to help build yet another house for the St. Louis Community. The volunteers from our church were Dick & Ellen Kaye Augustine, Chad Beckmann, Norma & Wally Bentrup, Brian Buttry, Diana Davis, Gus Elia, Don Fuhrig, Hope & Joe Krewson, Lois Lamar, Gene Royce, Marilyn and Walt Williams.

The house they worked on was on Hebert Street, just a few blocks from Crowne Candy Store. All of these new homes are energy efficient and environmentally healthy. The home that was worked on was in a group of three with each of them a little bit different. One of them was a two story house. The one COTM volunteers worked on was a one story house.

The day started with a prayer given by one of the leaders. We were then assigned to our Hourse Leader and his team of Crew Leaders. We were teamed up with volunteers from Parkway UCC Church. We were given instructions for the day and then got started. Hope Krewson was assigned as Safety Officer and went off for a little bit to get instructions for the day. Roof trusses were the first order of business. As that assembly line moved along the roof top it started freeing up room below for other work. Then interior walls started going up. One by one they were moved into place and nailed in. We could see a house coming together. The woman that will be living in this house was there all day and along with her friends and family contributed to the work done that day. When we were nailing in the first wall to one of the bedrooms we asked her if she wanted to help put the wall in place. She hopped right to it and with a little bit of practice was driving in those 16 penny nails. Some of the team was attaching the blueboard (foam insulation) to the exterior of the house. Another team cut the blueboard from the inside to the periphery of the window openings. By the end of the day everyone was tired but if you climbed the stairs and walked through the house you walked through the rooms of the house and if you looked up you saw all of the roof trusses in place. Great Job COTM volunteers!
